JF Shielding
MASS = 419 Ton In the region of the forward shield (JF) there is more radial space for shielding, which is particularly necessary since the copper absorber in front of the quadra poles is a very strong source of background. The JF is in the form of a large, dismountable, interlocking pieces which are supported on a truck, with the sections removable by the surface crane. the inner edge of the shield is defined by the line |ή| = 4.6; the outer edge matches the muon spectrometer coverage. The shielding interlocks with the JT in a chicane to minimize leakage, and immediately downstream of the toroid it is cylindrcal so that the muon wheel can be retracted on its rail system.
